The Gallant Rimer- Simar Singh

Many a time in various situations, like in family problems, financial crisis, or any other problems which were thought a way out of your league by your parents or elders, you might have felt like saying something but you could not raise your voice or say anything because you were not good enough for that situation, maybe because you were too young. (As per your parents) The idea of not saying something when elders are talking or hushing away children because they know nothing good are all the branches of our patriarchal society. (Now, don’t start hushing away your parents or elders after reading this).

However, there’s this guy who belongs to the same society as us, made a way for his thoughts through a medium like poetry. If you listen to his poetry, you will feel a spirit of enthusiasm inside you. You will feel a gush of fresh air whirling inside you. He is a major achiever and an inspiration to the youth to rise up their voices. If he can, then you can, then we all can. There’s no age for passion and discovery.

His penning down of poetries began at the age of 9. He is a 16 year young Sardar lad who originated the idea for the open mic rimers. The film industry inspired him so much that he started making short films at the age of fourteen. You will be surprised to know that he has directed ten short films. He totally adores the filmmaking process due to which he has been in constant touch with this industry. He started directing these short films at the age of fourteen.

According to him, everyone should come out of the unnecessary pressures which are imposed on us by the society. Boys should not bother about being a man, being independent, being macho as by doing this they will ultimately get ignorant of the real soul inside them. It’s not the society which makes us; it is up to us how vulnerable we want to be. His poetry titled, “Unman Yourself” highlights all such ridiculous notions of masculinity. In this, he talks openly about the insecurities and conveys the message of fulfilling their dreams.

The idea of open mic performances came to him after he got a dare from his friends. Everyone in his group thought him to be a humorous personality and even he thinks the same. So, one of his friends suggested him to try standup comedy. The dare was that he has to perform as a standup comedian in an event. He agreed to it, unknown of the fact that registrations were closed a month before. Despite the fact that he was not able to register, he went there with his friends and pleaded the organizers to let him perform for that particular day.

After lots of requests, the organizers agreed to the fact and let him perform at the event. The audience was not fascinated by his performance, though he and his friends thought that he was very much humorous.  But he was able to gain around only two to three laughs during the entire performance. His idea of comedy was television soap “Sasural Simar Ka” where we compared the situations in his life to the plot of the serial and how it affected him.  At the end of the show, some of the cool comedians walked up to him and encouraged him to work more on his comedy and suggested him to keep trying for it. Soon, he started working on that and for about six months pursued his passion of stand-up comedy at various events.

He got himself into one more blunder when he thought that he has registered for the stand up for the open mic but he got himself into the world of poetry. He unknowingly registered himself for the poetry open mic event. So, his name ended up on the list of poets who were bound to perform that day. Though he had been writing poetry since he was nine, however little did he know that he could perform it in front of the audience. At the time when he used to write poetry, he was not aware of the platforms or the opportunities he could take himself into. He never knew that there can be such a great platform for the poets as well.

Back in his mind, he thought that rhymes were written only for storing in the diaries. So, now all of a sudden he was standing in the middle of nowhere, ready to perform his first open mic poetry. In this adventurous way, he was introduced to the world of spoken poetry.   He never had any initial motivation in the field of poetry; it was just that everyone in his family is a writer, artist, or something in the creative fields, so writing was something which was compulsory in his family. He was given a diary in which he had to jot down anything. So, he never had an option except writing. He started to adore it in the end, though. Since he cannot wait for someone to bring transformation in the society, he himself geared up to take that initiative for himself and the society

His first poetry was titled Papa, which was due at the end of December. During his 11th grade examinations, he got this idea of open mic poetry platform i.e. UnErase Poetry. Soon, he came across one of the poetry platforms known as Button poetry. Then, he decided to build the same platform for the poets in Mumbai. This was how he became the founder of UnErase Poetry. He teaches us that waves are never an obstacle for the people who desperately want to learn how to surf.

Neil Hilborn is his idol. He wants to get the same recognition as him. The inspiration he got from him is tremendous. His main motive is to spread the culture of poetry like fire in the woods.

This young lad is the inventor and guardian of UnErase Poetry. It is basically an evolution to propagandize verbal word poetry in our country. Knowing that there are no proper platforms for the poets, so he came up with this idea to add wings to the fire. At such a young age, he has been a standup comedian, a poet, a director of various short films and what not. One of his future plans is to continue creating magnificent content for poetry. He wants to stem the branches of poetry in India. He wants his community to flourish as for now.

His writings include:-

  • The legal rapist
  • How to be a Man
  • Dear Religious extrovert
P.S -Do listen to his poetries, if you think he is not an inspiration. I really love his writings and I think he is a man of action.
